چکیده مقاله:

Objectives:Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is considered as one of the most common bacterial pathogens causing nosocomial infections in human cases. The pathogenesis of this bacterium in pet birds, however, is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to isolate the P. aeruginosa causing infection in pet birds with respiratory illness manifestations. Materials & Methods: Selective media, biochemical tests and species-specific PCR were used toisolate and identify the P. aeruginosa isolates. The genome of P. aeruginosa is capable of reading several efflux RND pumps which, from clinical point of view, are very important in multidrug resistance. Therefore, the MexAB-OprM pump is considered as one of the most efficient RND pumps for P. aeruginosa. The existence of MexAB-OprM pumps genes was detected among P. aeruginosa isolated from birds referred to the pet bird clinic of the University of Tehran by using specific primers in multiplex PCR reaction. In addition, antibacterial susceptibility test was employed to test the sensitivity of the isolates to ۲۰ antibacterial agents. Results & Conclusion: A total of seven P. aeruginosa isolates were confirmed by both biochemical and species-specific PCR. The results of antibacterial susceptibility test showed the multidrug resistance was common among isolates. The highest resistance (۱۰۰%) was observed toneomycin, kanamycin, rifampicin and vancomycin followed by colistin (۵۷%). The presence of mexA and oprM genes was observed in all isolates. However, the mexB gene was not amplified in any of isolates. The findings of this study showed the prevalence of P. aeruginosa among pet birds. These findings are very important for public health
