An overview of the advantages and disadvantages of biofilm

Bacteria can attach to almost any surface and form complex, architected communities called biofilms. In biofilms, cells grow in multicellular aggregates and are surrounded by an extracellular matrix produced and enclosed by the bacteria themselves. Biofilms play an important role in the persistence of bacterial infections. Biofilm formation is observed in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In fact, one of the main survival mechanisms of bacteria in different environments is to use this ability to produce biofilm and live in it. Bacteria inside a biofilm are several times more resistant to antibiotics than planktonic bacteria.
